Reflections on flat surfaces (ISOMETRIC)
( Updated Jan 4th 2004 )
On this third part we will work on reflections and how to draw an object's reflection on an isometric flat (ground) surface.
For this tutorial we will be using MS Paint and Paint Shop Pro.
STEP -1
We need the isometric object that will be reflected in the ground. I'll be using the sample we did in part 2 and this background:

First of all we must create the reflection from our current image. We will start
with the 2 lines at the base (1) and the
other 2 (2) to conform the basic reflection
we will see in the ground. Apply the colors (3)
and draw some lines (those would be the letters reflection)
(4). On a real reflection the letters won't be
seen but we will be doing a not so real reflection so you get used to add detail
on your pieces. Finally we add the shinning effect but our lines will be
diagonal this time (5).

STEP -2
Ok, we have our base reflection (6), but a reflection should not have the same intensity as the original and should be tinted with the ground color reflecting it. PsP comes in handy now... using layers like in the swimming pool tutorial. In our background most of the reflection will be on the white tiles and some will be on the blue tiles, so we will need our reflection in two versions, one for the white tiles, the other for the blue tiles.

Here you have the 2 versions (7) at a 70% opacity. Color (A) for the blue, color (B) for the white (from Azul and Blanco in Spanish)

STEP -3
Apply our reflection on the background and you'll get the final result. How to do it? (still have not figured it out...?) Detail explanation: fill the chosen tiles with a fill color (green in the sample), select this color as transparent and overlay the image, do it twice once with each tile type and the appropiate reflection. This will produce something like (8) but we need to revert the tiles to the original color, getting the final image (9).

Nice? I think so... it does the trick and looks very real to me. Hope this tutorial helped you achieve this effect from now on.
