IMAGE EFFECTS

RETURN TO HOME

In this tutorial we will learn to apply different effects to our pixel-art.

We will be using MS-Paint for this tutorial.

Step-by-step guide

We will start from image (1), showing a broken bridge. As is, it looks like this is a recent happening... the bridge looks almost new. We will be applying some effects to make it look old.As you can see in image (2) we removed small parts of the bridge, leaving only small stray pixels in the gaps. In image (3) we added some plants and moss to the bridge... and finally in image (4) we added some rust to the metallic parts in the bridge. So adding the gaps, vegetation and rust we made the bridge an oldie!

I added some more samples from the bridge and in image (5) you can see the palette I used for rust and vegetation. A trick, try the vegetation outside the image, like in image (6), to give it some tries and overlap it on the image to see the overall effect.

Tricks & Tips

I'd encourage you to try on a cube to get some practice. First create a cubic block and work out some effects into it. I just show you some samples from my test cube (8)... I added some dirt and scratches, added some texture, moved it to an icy place (cold winter), made it out of ice... If you can apply an effect into a simple block you can copy the technique into a more elaborated pixel-art... it is far easier to think first on a small element like a block than starting on a full sized game background... later on you can apply what you practiced to the big thing, but first you must be confident on the effects you will be applying and practicing in the block really helps!

As a reference, I worked out the block (7)... with some dirt, scratches, rust and vegetation prior to my attempts on the bridge.

Now see the block and the bridge ona single image:

O.k, that's all! Hope you liked this tutorial and find some help and inspiration on it.
